Canadian researcher, born in Montreal, Quebec
(Canada), Serge Cazelais undertakes work in the fields of Early
Christianity, in Mediterranean religions, in paleography and ecdotic,
as well as Greek and Latin literature of Late
Antiquity
He has been an active member of the Research Group in
Christianity and Late Antiquity" (GRECAT
- Institut d'Études Anciennes) of Université
Laval since 1999. During the 2007 Winter semester he lectured an
introductory
course in Judaism in Bishop's University, Lennoxville (Sherbrooke).
During the last years, he was a Doctoral and Research Fellow
in St.
Thomas
University, Fredericton, New Brunswick (2005-2006) and a Visiting
Researcher at Institut
des Sources Chrétiennes - CNRS UMR 5189
(HiSoMA)
in Lyon, France (2004-2005).
He is currently preparing, under the direction of professor Anne
Pasquier, a doctoral dissertation in Religious Studies at Université
Laval in the field of the early interpretations of the Bible.
Its subject is an analysis of the
Commentary on the epistle of Paul to the Philippiens, a Latin
work composed by Marius Victorinus, a Master of rhetoric who became
Christian and who lived in Rome in the Fourth
century. Within the framework of this project, he intends to publish an
edition and a French translation of the whole of Commentarii in Apostolum of Marius
Victorinus in collaboration with the Institut des Sources Chrétienne of
Lyon.
His interest for ancient religions also carried him out to
study Coptic language and the Nag
Hammadi Library, as well as the other gnostic papyri such as the
Berlin Codex (BG 8502), the
Bruce Codex, the Askew Codex (which contains the famous text
entitled Pistis Sophia) as well as the Gospel of Judas recently
published by the National Geographic Society.
Another of its subjects of predilection is the study of
ancient Jewish and Christian exegetic traditions of the book of Genesis.
He had the chance to study Hebrew language in Lyon with professor
Bernard Barc, an outstanding researcher in gnostic literature and
Hebrew grammar as well as Jewish literature of the Second Temple
period. Serge Cazelais is interested in syntax and lexicology of the
book of Genesis and in the history of its interpretations.
Serge Cazelais is an appreciated lecturer. He had the
occasion to adress in several Canadian provinces, in the United States
and in France. He authored scientific papers in the field of
ancient Mediterranean religions, He is currently
preparing two books, intended for the general public, on gnosticism and
the Nag Hammadi Library.
